Finding Articles: Introduction

While in college you will be required to complete a variety of research projects. In the ChicoRIO Library Catalog module you learned the basics of how to locate books and other items in the library. You will probably be required to find newspaper, magazine, and "scholarly" (or "academic") journal articles for your projects as well.

Articles can be found in periodicals, such as the ones pictured above.

Reasons you might want articles rather than books are:

  • they are shorter
  • they are usually more current
  • they often address specific, narrow aspects of a topic
  • more articles than books are published, so there are more articles from which to choose

Finding articles can sometimes be difficult. This module will teach you how to locate articles from periodicals: newspapers, magazines, and journals.

Where Are Articles in the Meriam Library?

The Meriam Library has periodicals in three formats: 1) online (electronic) periodicals, 2) hard copy periodicals and 3) microforms.

1. Online Periodicals
The library has paid for CSU, Chico students, facutly, and staff to have access to a large collection of online journals, magazines, and newspapers. These online sources can be accessed through the ReSEARCH Station, both on or off campus.

2. Hard Copy Periodicals
The hard copies of periodicals are shelved in call number order on the 2nd floor of the Meriam Library. Older issues are bound together with a hard cover similar to a book. Current issues are unbound.

3. Microforms
Some magazines, journals, and newspapers are kept in microfiche or microfilm. These will have a call number followed either by (Microfilm) or (Microfiche) and are located in metal cabinets in the Media & Microforms Room. Copies of articles on microforms can be printed from the reader machines used to view the microforms.
