About Us

What is SHPE?

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.¹

What is LTC?

Latinos in Technical Careers (LTC) is a Region 1 student chapter of SHPE at CSU, Chico. The primary purpose of LTC is to increase awareness of Latino participation in technical related fields such as Computer Science, Engineering, Natural Sciences, Industrial/Electrical Technology, Communications, and Business. Academic achievement and career awareness are emphasized by providing workshops, regional and national conferences, leadership events, and community service, which helps promote LTC's primary goals of education, leadership, and community. Although LTC's emphasis is on Latinos in education in Technical related fields, we support students of all majors and all backgrounds.

Constitution

Our constitution serves as a guideline to help us in succeeding with our goals. It can be changed only to accommodate the needs of the organization as a whole.

Point System

The point system is a way of keeping track of a member's activity level. The more a member participates in LTC Activities, the more points they earn. Points are tallied up and help us determine which members will represent LTC in SHPE's National Conference.
