Tracy R. Butts' pictureTracy Butts received her doctorate in English from The University of Georgia (2001). She teaches courses in African American, American, and multicultural literature. Her areas of interest include Black Women Writers, Black Feminist and Womanist Theory, and contemporary American literature. Her current research uses Hip Hop culture as a lens for reading 18th and 19th century works of African American literature such as Phillis Wheatley’s Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral (1773), Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of an American Slave (1845), and Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861).
