Greetings from Chico!

shootershooterYou have reached the internet home of Glenn M. Gomes, Professor Emeritus of Management in the College of Business, California State University, Chico. I am a native Californian--born (1949), raised, and educated in the Golden State. After receiving my Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Southern California in 1984, I joined the Department of Management at CSUC in 1985 (and here is a brief academic résumé).  Recently I entered the Faculty Early Retirement Program, whereby I teach only during the spring semesters over the next five years.  When not in the classroom, I enjoy my Western European travels, especially to England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands (and now I have even more time to indulge my wanderlust); competition skeet shooting; listening to many forms of music (and sometimes wishing I was playing bass guitar in the band); and remembering the best of times, walking and playing with my special little canine friend, Gorby, who may be gone now, but who will never be forgotten.  For those of you seeking a smile and some lighter fare, perhaps a quick venture to Guv's Gallery for a glimpse of a much younger version of my current self--plus some more recent "on the road" pictures--might do the trick.  Thanks for dropping by for a visit!!

On Higher Education

Ralph Waldo Emerson    "If the colleges were better, if they really had it, you would need to get the police at the gates to keep order in the inrushing multitude. See in college how we thwart the natural love of learning by leaving the natural method of teaching what each wishes to learn, and insisting that you shall learn what you have no taste or capacity for. The college, which should be a place of delightful labor, is made odious and unhealthy, and the young men are tempted to frivolous amusements to rally their jaded spirits. I would have the studies elective. Scholarship is to be created not by compulsion, but by awakening a pure interest in knowledge. The wise instructor accomplishes this by opening to his pupils precisely the attractions the study has for himself. The marking is a system for schools, not for the college; for boys, not for men; and it is an ungracious work to put on a professor."
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson
