4d. Additional library resources needed. Indicate the commitment
of the campus to purchase or borrow through interlibrary loan
these additional resources.
Library resources are critical for this major to be successful.
A review of the library holdings at the consortium campuses
shows that there is a base of text materials sufficient for
Modern Jewish Studies, including dozens of periodicals in
hard copy on each of the three campuses. Additionally, key
online journals available with full text articles include
the Journal of Jewish Studies, Jewish Bible Quarterly, Commentary,
Journal of Progressive Judaism, Hebrew Studies, Judaism, Journal
of Near East Studies, and Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
It is our intention to add to the already fairly strong
library resource base in the system by creating a core of
material available to students online via Web CT and Blackboard.
These materials will include online scriptures, Talmud, Nuremberg
War Crimes Tribunal, and many other documents and original
source material. Students will access this material via the
Worldwide Web.
The compressed video (CODEC) facilities and equipment at
SFSU, SDSU, and CSU, Chico are adequate to offer elective
courses in Jewish Studies. Online courseware includes Web
CT, Horizon Live, and Blackboard. The SFSU Center for the
Enhancement of Teaching, the CSU, Chico Technology and Learning
Program, and the Technology Support offices at SDSU will assist
faculty in preparing online course materials.
The cost for Web CT site license is $3,000 per year. The
cost for a server will be $5,000. The cost for licenses for
databases and texts is estimated at $20,000. A 40-hour training
program (already completed) for faculty from the three participating
campuses and CSU, Long Beach cost about $5,000 per year for
three years or $15,000 plus transportation, per diem, and
housing. Funding support came from grants and an endowment
campaign and whatever state support is available. We have
already raised $50,000 from the Northern California Jewish
Federation with a $50,000 match from the CSU Chancellor's
Office for this project as well as $50,000 from the Koret
Foundation.
