The Rhetoric and History of Anti-Semitism
MJS 498 Section 70 - #6537 (CSU, Chico Students)
MJS 498 Section 72 - #6538 (On-line Students) Monday 3 – 5:50 CSU, Chico room TBA
Instructor: Professor Sam Edelman, Dir. Modern Jewish Studies
This course is a senior level – graduate level course. It will be offered in Modern Jewish Studies for both students in the major and for students outside the major as a potential elective course.
The goal of the course is to explore the origins of hate speech embodied in what has been called anti-Semitism. Anti-Semitism acts in many ways as the paradigmatic hate speech. The categories, forms and techniques used by the promoters of hate via anti-Semitism are the same categories, forms and techniques that are used to promote hate against women, Asians, Latinos, African Americans, Native Americans, Gays and Lesbians, immigrants and a pantheon of those viewed as the “other”.
This course will explore the rhetorical nature of antisemitism and other forms of hate speech, their origins in history, their effects through out history and their implication for public discourse and public opinion in the political arena as well as in culture and society.
Since this an online course using both streaming audio and video those students from off campus and those students on campus who choose to do all or part of the course online will need to update their Internet Explorer or Netscape and will need to purchase a microphone/headset to the audio portion of the course.
Students off campus may register for the course through concurrent enrollment on their respective CSU Campus.
