The Chico State Men’s Lacrosse Team was founded in 1985 by Kurt Frietzche, a major in Construction Management and during the 1986 season it played pick-up games with Western Collegiate Lacrosse League (WCLL teams). In 1986-1987 the team was made a probationary member of the WCLL and was coached by Joe Robinson. It ended the season with 3 wins and 6 losses. In 1987 the team became a full member of the WCLL and Dick Flory took over the coaching duties, the team played in Division II of the WCLL during the 1988 season and was 4 and 1 in the division, and 5 and 4 overall, winning the Division II Championship and losing to Stanford in the first round of the WCLL playoffs. During the 1989 season the team went 6 and 0 in the division and 9 and 2 overall and lost to UC, Davis in the first round of the playoffs. That year Jeff Williams was high scorer in the WCLL with 62 goals and 19 assists in 11 games and Will Priest had 107 saves and 44 goals against in 11 games, second among goalies in the League.
The team moved up to Division I in the 1990 season and went 0 and 6 in the division and 7 and 6 overall. It moved back down to Division II for the 1991 season and went 3 and 3 in the division and 4 and 6 overall. The highlight of the season was a 8 -7 victory over Chapman after a grueling seven overtime periods. For the 1992 season the team moved back up to Division I and went 2 and 4 in the division and 7 and 4 overall with Jamie Poore leading the League in points with 57 points in 10 games including 9 goals and 5 assists against University of the Pacific.
During the 1993 season the team remained in Division I and went 0 and 4 in the division and 3 and 7 overall. Records for the 1994 and 1995 season have not yet been located. Brian Kehoe took over the coaching duties for the 1995 season.
