MUSC 101

Theory I 3.0 Fall

Prerequisites: Knowledge of the fundamentals of music and its notation to be determined by diagnostic exam. Concurrent enrollment in MUSC 103. Required for majors, recommended for minors: keyboard proficiency or concurrent enrollment in MUSC 105.

Fundamental concepts and basic notation of music. Introduction to chord symbology, harmonic progression, voice leading, and part writing, introduction to chromaticism, modulation, and basic principles of form. Formerly MUS 001A.


MUSC 102

Theory II 3.0 Spring

Prerequisites: MUSC 101 with a minimum grade of C-. Concurrent enrollment in MUSC 104. Required for majors, recommended for minors: keyboard proficiency or concurrent enrollment in MUSC 106.

Further study of voice leading, part writing, and principals of form. Introduction to chromaticism and modulation. Formerly MUS 001B.

Pep Band is intended to give any student who plays a musical instrument (wind, brass, or percussion) an opportunity to perform in a fun, energetic, and exciting band. The Pep Band plays for university events. This course does not fulfill the large ensemble requirement for music majors. 2.0 hours activity. A creative and experiental approach to the development of musical skills based on contemporary approaches used in music education. The course will be centered on the Orff Schulwerk philosophy; other contemporary methods will be introduced and will include Kodaly, Gordon, Dalcroze, and Laban. Basic skills to be included are rhythm, singing, movement, improvisation, playing unpitched and pitched percussion instruments, music reading, and music listening.
