THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC:


Option in Accompanying
A broad yet comprehensive degree program with a less tightly structured series of courses. Intended to give a "broad brush" view of the music discipline, courses include Music Technology, conducting, Non-Western music, scoring/arranging, and many others. Students, with the help of an advisor, tailor this program to specific interests.

Option in Music Education
If you are considering a career as a music educator, consider the Music Education program at Chico State. We prepare students to meet the challenges of teaching through a combination of courses and field experiences. Graduates leave our program with the preparation needed to enter the Credential Program as well as the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in the K-12 music classroom. Our music education faculty has a wealth of experience working in various school settings and all are active in state and national education organizations. Our award winning student chapter of the Music Educators National Association will give you the opportunity to expand your school experiences beyond the university through attendance at conventions and in-service projects. This is an outstanding program. We welcome anyone who is interested in the music education Profession.

Option in Performance
Individual curriculum patterns in Instrumental, Vocal, and Keyboard. Ample opportunities for private instruction, solo and ensemble playing.

Vocal students at California State University Chico can be involved with the Opera Workshop, various university choruses, and musical theater groups. Proper vocal technique, musical styles and acting are the focuses of the Opera Workshop program and will provide young singers with essential musical, artistic and vocal skills.

THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC INDUSTRY AND TECHNOLOGY:


Option in Music Industry
The Music Industry Program is one of the country’s five largest and is the biggest in the West. The curriculum includes courses in music industry, technology, music and business. The practical learning component includes the student-run Wild Oak Records (www.wildoakrecords.com), Wild Oak Publishing, Wild Oak Songwriter's Guild and internships in the United States, Europe and Asia. We host a major concert or music industry conference every semester. Graduates of our program are employed at major and independent record labels; major artist management firms; nationally-renowned recording studios and mastering facilities; wholesale and retail musical equipment and instrument sales companies; national concert promoters and music festivals; and, are touring as engineers and road managers for national acts. Other graduates are earning master's degrees in business/music industry and many have become entrepreneurs, using their skills in web design and business.

Option in Recording Arts
The Option in Recording Arts provides a curriculum for students who wish to seek employment in fields combining music and technology. A music major in the Recording Arts Option will take courses in composition with electronic media, audio recording, and basic electronics with electives in audio for video and the music industry. Completion of a BA in this program will offer to a music major enhanced employment opportunities in technical areas; i.e., in the recording industry (recording engineer, director, producer, editor, music coordinator, etc.) and in music synthesis (electronic musical instruments–composition, performance, teaching, retail sales, etc.). Employment opportunities can be further improved by pairing the Option in Recording Arts with the Option in Music Industry or with a minor in an area such as communications.

Intended to augment other major fields of study, the Music minor provides a good basic knowledge of music theory, history, and other fundamentals. Performance opportunities and some private study are included.

CERTIFICATE in Keyboard Pedagogy
The certificate in Keyboard Pedagogy is for students who wish to specialize in group and/or private keyboard teaching. The program can be completed in two semesters of residency. This program is for the student who already has a degree in music or who wishes to take the program in conjunction with the BA or MA in Music. Students receive both theoretical and practical training in the art of teaching, including ongoing participation through observation, assisting, and teaching in group and studio keyboard settings.

CERTIFICATE in Vocal Performance & Pedagogy

The Certificate in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy is for students who wish to specialize in Vocal Performance and group and/or private vocal teaching. The program can be completed in two semesters of residency. This program is for the student who already has a degree in music or who wishes to take the program in conjunction with the MA in Music. Students receive both theoretical and practical training in the art of Singing and teaching, including the opportunities of performing with Opera Workshop and vocal recitals/concerts.
