Vocal Training at Chico State

If you have the talent and determination, we have the ideal vocal program for you. Ensembles and Studio Voice The Choral and Opera Workshop programs at Chico State offer talented singers the
opportunity to perform a wide variety of music in several ensembles and workshop
environments. Students participate in choral concerts and opera workshop productions, as
well as large-scale events ranging from holiday extravaganzas to operas.
Dr. Ying YehDirector of Opera Workshop Ying Yeh became the Opera Workshop director in the fall of 1997. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree and masters degree in Voice from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. She also received an Artistic Diploma in Opera from the University of Illinois and her Bachelor of Voice from the Central Conservatory of Music, Beijing, China. Dr. Yeh has held teaching positions at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, the University of Arkansas, the University of Illinois, and State University of New York, Stony Brook.
Dr. Jeffrey GemmellDirector of Choral Activities Jeffrey Gemmell has been at Chico State since the fall of 1999. He conducts Chamber Singers, A Cappella Choir, and University Chorus. He also teaches Studio Voice, Vocal Pedagogy, Secondary School Vocal Techniques, and Advanced Choral Conducting. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and holds advanced degrees in music education and voice performance from Northwestern University.
Professor Daun HayesStudio Voice Instructor Daun Hayes teaches studio voice at Chico State and at Simpson College, Redding. Before coming to Chico, she taught at Western Baptist College and at the University of Oregon. She received her master’s degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Oregon. She sings regionally with the Chico Early Music Ensemble and is a frequent soloist with other ensembles. Professor Linda SnodgrassStudio Voice Instructor Linda Marie Snodgrass received her master’s degree in Vocal Performance from CSU, Chico. She has performed opera, art song, and musical theater at the university and in the community for many years. She directed excellent church choirs in the area for fourteen years. She teaches class and studio voice at Chico State and privately. She is known for her disciplined and thorough approach to classical voice technique at beginning and intermediate levels. Scholarships The Department of Music offers more than $45,000 in scholarships for music majors. To qualify for scholarships students must meet all admissions standards and requirements for the university. Scholarships for vocalists include:
