Michael Johnson, the School of the Arts Production Manager, has been working backstage for over thirty years. He fell in love with lighting design while attending Santa Barbara High School. He went off to the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts in Santa Maria before transferring to Humboldt State for a BA in Theatre Arts in 1980. He entered Tulane University for an M.A. and soon became the technical director for the Music Department’s opera program. After two years, the west coast called and Mike returned to P.C.P.A. as assistant technical director. After a stint as technical director/ production manager for the Ensemble Theatre in Santa Barbara, Mike took on the job of senior stage technician at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In l990, he found the Perfect Place to Work: Chico State. He became the technical director for the Department of Theatre Arts and is now the Production Manager for the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and the School of the Arts.
Mike freelances as a lighting designer (his passion) at various theatres in the north state, and serves as lighting design consultant for the Department of Dance at Allan Hancock College.
Mike and his wife Patrice love living in Chico and feel very lucky to have been able to raise their children Rye and Mackenzie here. Mike enjoys the outdoors, golfing and a good barbecue. He also loves the San Francisco Giants and someday hopes to join their starting rotation soon.
