and Musical Theatre Dance
Dr. Susan Pate received her M. A. in Directing from SUNY Binghamton and her Ph. D. in Dance History from Cornell University. Before coming to CSU, Chico in 1986, Sue taught at SUNY Brockport, Cornell University, and San Jose State University. In addition to teaching Acting Sue coordinates the Musical Theatre Dance area. Besides supervising dance technique instruction, Sue teaches Movement, Mime, Musical Theatre Dance, Choreography, and Dance Production. Sue is Artistic Director for Chico Dance Theatre, the department's annual dance showcase (a popular student-designed,-directed, and -choreographed production). And she is one of the department's regular production season directors.
As a movement specialist, Dr. Pate is especially interested in physical theatre. She worked with Stephan Niedzialkowski (Polish Mime Theatre) and was a professional mime in NYC and the Bay Area. In dance, Sue loves the variety of styles found in Musical Theatre dance and ethnic dance forms. She recently spent her sabbatical studying dance in Russia and Spain, and performs with Flamenco Andaluz, a Northern California dance company. Sue has also been a frequent Guest Artist in Alaska and the Pribilof Islands. And her Christian dance company, Miriam Dancers, has performed all over California.
Although Sue was trained as an actress/dancer/mime, she has concentrated on directing and choreography for much of her professional work. She has directed 34 shows and 21 short works, choreographed 25 shows and 69 concert dances, and put together 40 mime pieces and 5 full-length mime projects. She lists Much Ado About Nothing, A Servant of Two Masters, Caucasian Chalk Circle, and A Funny Thing Happened as her favorite directing projects. Recent favorite choreographic projects include Once Upon a Mattress and Smile.
