Planners and other resource professionals, faculty, students and the general public are invited to a one-day conference on historic preservation on Wednesday, Sept. 5, from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union Auditorium, California State University, Chico.

The conference will offer presentations and workshops on the California Environmental Quality Act as it pertains to historical and cultural resources; the basic components of a historic preservation program; and historical, archaeological and tribal resources of Chico and Northern California.

A sample of program topics include “An Overview of Chico History and Historic Preservation” by Michael Magliari, professor, Department of History at CSU, Chico; “Creating a Historic Preservation Program” by Lucinda Woodward, State Office of Historic Preservation; “Historic Preservation—A Planner’s View” by Pam Figge from Planning Focus; and “Tribal Resources of the Chico Area” by Arlene Ward, Mechoopda Indian Tribe.

“It is our hope that the conference will increase awareness of historical and cultural preservation issues and foster the protection of these types of resources for future generations,” said Amy Huberland, assistant coordinator of the Northeast Information Center and one of the organizers of the conference. The center is one of eleven archaeological clearing centers in the state.

The Northeast Information Center, the State Office of Historic Preservation, the Chico Heritage Association, the City of Chico, the Mechoopda Indian Tribe, Planning Focus and the Far West Heritage Association are hosting the conference. Sponsors include New Urban Builders, the City of Chico, the City of Gridley and the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, CSU, Chico.
