Health Science Senior Receives Glenn Kendall Public Service Award
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Casal is graduating with two options within health science: gerontology and health education. Because of her commitment to the field and to her service in the community, the department chose her as their 2007 Outstanding Undergraduate Health Education Major of the Year, an award sponsored by the American Association of Health Education. In addition, Casal has been chosen the Outstanding Graduate in Health Education for Commencement 2007.
Casal volunteered to work with elder residents at Windchimes Assisted Living. As a result, she spearheaded a partnership with other student volunteers and residents to enable them to participate in the Alzheimer’s Walk, a fund-raiser for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Casals is vice president for the student group of the Health Professionals Association. She planned, organized and provided environmental education to low-income junior high students through CAMP WILD. She provided culture-specific health education to the local Hmong community on a variety of health and fitness topics and created her own environmental education booth for Earth Day on campus.
"Danielle is an extraordinary young woman," wrote the faculty who nominated her. "She is both responsible in her schoolwork and passionate about helping others. She is a positive influence in the department because of her eagerness to do well in her courses and her commitment to volunteer work during her free time. Her enthusiasm in helping others is contagious, and her follow-through is exemplary."
President Paul Zingg presented Casal with the award at the University Awards Reception on April 18.
