Visiting Scholar Is Expert on Women and the Presidency

Author and communications professor Nichola Gutgold, an expert on women in presidential politics and the media, will be at California State University, Chico as a President’s Visiting Scholar Oct. 6-8.

Gutgold, associate professor of communication arts and sciences at Penn State Lehigh Valley, is the author of “Paving the Way for Madam President,” a study of women who have run for president, and “Seen and Heard: The Women of Television News.”

Gutgold is currently working on a book about the 2008 presidential campaign of Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Gutgold will give a public talk on Monday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Holt 170 about her research into women presidential candidates. The talk is free and open to the public.

During her visit, Gutgold will also be lecturing in classes on campus and meeting with faculty and students.

Gutgold received her PhD in speech communication from Penn State in 1999. During her tenure at Penn State Lehigh Valley, she has won awards for research, advising and teaching.

Gutgold is also co-author with Molly Wertheimer of “Elizabeth Hanford Dole: Speaking from the Heart.” She has written numerous articles on topics including women in politics, political rhetoric and effective speech-making.
