Machado saw the videos of Jazz X-press on You Tube and made the connection to Winslow, who had been a guest of the festival on two prior occasions as the director of Jazz Studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
Winslow is now in the process of finding funds to get the band to Colorado June 6-8. They will perform the opening concert for the festival. For their contribution, members of Jazz X-press will receive all-access/backstage passes to the festival. The passes will allow the members of Jazz X-press to see such performers and groups as the Neville Brothers, McCoy Tyner, Maceo Parker, the Dave Liebman Group and Joe Lovano.
Rocky Winslow has been the director of Jazz Studies at California State University, Chico since fall of 2002. The Jazz Studies area boasts two big bands and several jazz combos. Winslow is a top call professional trumpet artist and clinician himself, appearing regularly at high schools and universities around the country. His last two CD recordings, both on Troppe Note Records, “Simple Complications” and “Out of the Blue” feature many of his original compositions.
The Telluride Jazz celebration has been produced by the Telluride Society of Jazz since 1977. Telluride is located high in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado.
