Join the Annual Butterfly Census on Friday, June 6

On Friday, June 6, entomologist Don Miller, Department of Biological Sciences, California State University, Chico and the staff from the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER) will be conducting the second annual butterfly count on the reserve and surrounding areas. This is a national census effort under the direction of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) Butterfly Counts.

Jason Tannen, Department of Art and Art History, California State University, Chico, has just had his film “The Pressman Negatives” nominated for a “Tinny Award” in the Film Noir category at the 2008 Swansea Film Festival. This international film festival takes place May 31–June 7 in Swansea Bay, United Kingdom. The festival will screen 175 films. “Pressman” was nominated along with five other films in the noir category.

California High Schools to Compete in Global Social Enterprise Competition

Student teams from 17 high schools across California will compete in the sixth annual Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) tournament in Sacramento this Saturday, April 26. The top four teams advancing from the preliminary round will repeat their multimedia presentations before a panel of over 120 leaders from academia, nonprofit organizations and the business sector, who will judge in the afternoon.

Classic Cultural Films Reissued by Anthropology Museum

Oakland Middle School Students Visit CSU, Chico to Say ‘Thanks’ for Computer Donation

In the fall of 2007, James Madison Middle School in Oakland was burglarized and lost many of its computers. The College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management at California State University, Chico, through the efforts of Professor James O’Bannon and Dean Ken Derucher, donated 20 computers and flat screen monitors and a printer to the school. Four students from the National Society of Black Engineers Chico Chapter and two staff members from the MESA Engineering Program at CSU, Chico went to the school to set up the computers and get the new computer lab up and running.

Iron Canyon Fish Ladder Project Receives Funding

The Research Foundation at California State University, Chico has received $220,000 funding from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for Phase II of a project to restore the Iron Canyon Fish Ladder. The ladder, located on Big Chico Creek above Salmon Hole, is in disrepair and has been for years. It is a critical component in moving salmon from the heavily used swimming holes of Upper Bidwell Park to the protected holes upstream of the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve and other private land holdings.

Chico State Students Work to Rebuild New Orleans

During the third week in January, 115 students, faculty and staff from California State University, Chico traveled to the New Orleans area to spend five days rebuilding houses devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This was the third trip to New Orleans for the “Rebuild New Orleans” project, and the trip with the largest number of volunteers.

In the fall of 2007, James Madison Middle School in Oakland was burglarized and lost many of its computers. The College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management at California State University, Chico, through the efforts of Professor James O’Bannon and Dean Ken Derucher, donated 20 computers and flat screen monitors and a printer to the school. Four students from the National Society of Black Engineers Chico Chapter and two staff members from the MESA Engineering Program at CSU, Chico went to the school to set up the computers and get the new computer lab up and running.

Chico State Students Work to Rebuild New Orleans

During the third week in January, 115 students, faculty and staff from California State University, Chico traveled to the New Orleans area to spend five days rebuilding houses devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This was the third trip to New Orleans for the “Rebuild New Orleans” project, and the trip with the largest number of volunteers.

Governor Schwarzenegger recently released his proposed 2008-09 budget that includes across-the-board cuts in response to an estimated $14 billion state deficit. The recommended reductions include a $313 million cut to the proposed California State University (CSU) budget passed by the CSU Board of Trustees. The proposed cut fails to fund access for 10,000 new students to the CSU.
