For the second year in a row, California State University, Chico is listed in the top 10 in two categories in the Chronicle of Higher Education’s Great Colleges to Work For survey.

Questionnaire responses were received from approximately 41,000 college and university employees at 247 campuses. The surveys were sent out in March 2009 and returned in April.

CSU, Chico was listed in the top 10 for 2009 in two areas: health insurance and post-retirement benefits. The University was in the large-school category consisting of schools with 10,000 or more students. The schools were not ranked within the top 10 by the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Other universities besides CSU, Chico noted by their employees for quality of health insurance included Ohio State, Notre Dame, USC, State University of New York, Buffalo and the University of Delaware.

Other universities besides CSU, Chico noted by their employees for quality of post-retirement benefits included Cornell, Duke, Kennesaw State, Lamar University and Western Michigan.

The Chronicle of Higher Education newspaper partnered with ModernThink, an organizational development firm, on the survey. In the large-school category, questionnaires are sent out to 600 faculty, staff and administrators at each campus.

Among the other categories of working conditions the survey asked about were facilities, policies, departmental working relationships and professional development.

The Chronicle of Higher Education published the results last month. An online version of the results is at http://chronicle.com/section/The-Academic-Workplace/156. The newspaper reported that the number of participating institutions nearly tripled in 2009.
