CSU, Chico’s Speech and Debate Team To Host Championship Tournament

Approximately 200-250 student competitors, coaches and judges will be in attendance, starting with registration Friday afternoon in Tehama Hall.
Events will take place throughout campus Friday, Saturday and Sunday, ending with an awards presentation Sunday afternoon.
Schools competing include Pepperdine University, UCLA, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, San Jose State, CSU, Sacramento, Humboldt State, University of the Pacific and a number of community colleges.
Students, faculty, staff and members of the community are encouraged to attend the events.
Sue Peterson, director of Speech and Debate at CSU, Chico, said CSU, Chico students will be helping run the tournament as well as competing in it.
The tournament includes policy team debate and parliamentary debate, as well as 11 individual speaking events, including prose, poetry, persuasive speaking, dramatic interpretation, duo interpretation, informative speaking, after-dinner speaking, communication analysis, programmed oral interpretation, impromptu speaking and extemporaneous speaking.
At national tournaments in San Diego Feb. 6-8, several CSU, Chico students posted strong results, including first-year competitor Lindsey Rein, who was a finalist in extemporaneous speaking and drama interpretation at two tournaments, and took first place in impromptu speaking at the tournament at Pt. Loma University.
