Barger’s involvement and leadership in community engagement began early in her college career. She began volunteering in the fall of 2007 in both the Tutorial and Sonoma Weekend Immersion Programs at CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education). “After just one semester, I was hooked,” said Barger. “I wanted to join the CAVE staff as a way to encourage, recruit and lead other CSU, Chico students to the discovery of service and to become more community and civically engaged.”
Barger has served as the Tutorial Program coordinator since fall 2008, the Adults and Environmental Program director and the Service Learning director at CAVE. In addition, she continues to volunteer in the Yountville Weekend Immersion Program and serve as co-president of the campus volleyball team.
In 2009-2010, she was selected as one of three CSU student leader mentors. In this capacity, she supported four CSU campus teams in their development of a new student leadership community engagement program. She was an advocate for student voices during the project and helped represent CSU student leadership during conference presentations at the American Democracy Project National Meeting, U.S. Social Forum and the National Conference on Volunteering and Service.
Barger is currently serving at the vice president for the Associated Students at CSU, Chico.
An article in CSU Impact about the CSU student leadership initiative, of which Barger was a part, can be found at http://www.calstate.edu/cce/news_pubs/csu_impact/082610.shtml.
