De-Stress Fest Brings Puppies and Pampering to CSU, Chico Students Before Finals

Salsa lessons, puppies and five-minute massages were offered to California State University, Chico students during the De-Stress Fest held on Dec. 9 during the week before finals. For several years, the Health and Wellness Center has been sponsoring activities to help students manage the stress of upcoming final tests and projects. This is the second year that puppies have been brought to campus for students to hold, pet and play with.

Forbes Magazine Lists CSU, Chico in Top 20 Schools that Help Minorities Succeed in Science and Math

Forbes Magazine recently set out to determine which colleges and universities in the nation do the best job of graduating women and minorities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. In the Dec. 15 Forbes.com, Forbes released two lists of best colleges: one for women and one for minorities. California State University, Chico is listed 15th on the top 20 list of "The Best Colleges for Minorities in STEM."

Cartographers Provide Maps for Statewide Environmental Curriculum

California State University, Chico’s outstanding reputation and unmatched capabilities in cartography garnered a grant  to the Department of Geography and Planning. Faculty Eugenie Rovai and Steve Stewart were awarded $50,000 in March 2010 to contribute high-quality maps to a new California environmentally-focused curriculum. The funds paid for the work of two student cartographers, undergraduate Sarah Bergquist and graduate Sylvia Cares.

Two California State University, Chico students won awards at the 20th Annual Media Arts Festival (MAF) held Nov. 6 at CSU, Fullerton for their animation and video game projects. A total of 131 entries from the 23-campus California State University system were received and judged by a panel of industry experts who chose 29 finalists for award competition in nine categories, including interactive and animation.

Leading-Edge International Master’s Program in Cognition and Visualization Is Funded

A dual master’s program among universities in the United States, France and Germany has been funded on both sides of the Atlantic for $832,000 by the European Commission and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, a program of the U.S. Department of Education. The master’s program, International Cognitive Visualization (ICV), breaks ground in an emerging science by being the first of its kind worldwide to train multilingual students to be specialists in both cognitive visualization and international business.

Renovated Recording Studio Named for Founder of Recording Arts Program

Raymond Barker, founder of the Recording Arts Program at California State University, Chico, was surprised two times at the unveiling of the Department of Music’s renovated recording studio on Oct. 8: he heard, for the first time, that the studio will be named after him, and he learned of the creation of the endowed Raymond Barker Recording Arts Scholarship. The scholarship already has more than $18,000 in donations and is earmarked exclusively for recording arts students.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning War Correspondent to Lecture

Chris Hedges, a foreign correspondent for almost two decades, will present the President’s Visiting Scholar/Hodgkins Lecture on Monday, Oct. 4. On Sunday, Sept. 12, forensic anthropology faculty took a team of students to the site of the Sept. 9 San Bruno explosions and fires, at the request of the San Mateo Coroner’s Office. Cartographers Provide Maps for Statewide Environmental Curriculum

Renovated Recording Studio Named for Founder of Recording Arts Program

Raymond Barker, founder of the Recording Arts Program at California State University, Chico, was surprised two times at the unveiling of the Department of Music’s renovated recording studio on Oct. 8: he heard, for the first time, that the studio will be named after him, and he learned of the creation of the endowed Raymond Barker Recording Arts Scholarship. The scholarship already has more than $18,000 in donations and is earmarked exclusively for recording arts students.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning War Correspondent to Lecture

Chris Hedges, a foreign correspondent for almost two decades, will present the President’s Visiting Scholar/Hodgkins Lecture on Monday, Oct. 4. Hedges served as The New York Times bureau chief in the Balkans and the Middle East, and he and his team won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting on global terrorism. He also received the 2002 Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism.

Leading-Edge International Master’s Program in Cognition and Visualization Is Funded

A dual master’s program among universities in the United States, France and Germany has been funded on both sides of the Atlantic for $832,000 by the European Commission and the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, a program of the U.S. Department of Education. The master’s program, International Cognitive Visualization (ICV), breaks ground in an emerging science by being the first of its kind worldwide to train multilingual students to be specialists in both cognitive visualization and international business.

On Sunday, Sept. 12, forensic anthropology faculty took a team of students to the site of the Sept. 9 San Bruno explosions and fires, at the request of the San Mateo Coroner’s Office. Forensic scientists Eric Bartelink, Colleen Milligan and Turhon Murad, all with the California State University, Chico Human Identification Laboratory, took 13 students and one recent alum to assist with the fire scene recovery. They were joined by San Francisco State University forensic anthropology faculty members Mark Griffin, Ph.D. and Cynthia Wilczak, Ph.D.
