The Gateway Science Museum at California State University, Chico, dedicated to the exploration, discovery and celebration of Northern California, announced today that its Grand Opening will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27. The public grand opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the opening of the museum at 10:30 a.m.

Located at 625 Esplanade at the east end of the CSU, Chico campus, the Gateway Science Museum will provide exhibits, community volunteer opportunities, field trips, educational programs and fun for all age groups. Museum hours will be noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday–Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

“This Grand Opening is more than a date to mark on your calendar,” said CSU, Chico President Paul Zingg. “It is an historic opportunity to participate in our children’s future and the future of Northern California. The Gateway Science Museum will provide opportunities to have a positive impact on our environment, strengthen connections among the community, University and Northern California region, and invite visitors to explore and enjoy the wonders of science and our natural world.”

Throughout spring 2010, the Gateway Science Museum will host “Backyard Monsters: The World of Insects,” an interactive, adventure in which visitors of all ages can learn about insects and their role in the environment, and see amazing collections of beetles, butterflies and other creatures. The “Backyard Monsters” exhibit includes 6-foot-tall animatronic insects sure to fascinate young and old alike.

“Because of the tremendous efforts of so many, this ‘gateway’ to learning and fun and the sheer love of science is now a reality,” said Judy Sitton, president of the Board of the Gateway Science Museum. “The need to provide science education has never been greater, and we are proud and excited to be a part of the beginning of a journey of exploration and education of our North State.”

Grand opening day activities include an opening ceremony, live animal demonstrations, science activities in the Discovery Room and Education Station, and an opportunity to interact with scientists in the Demonstration Lab.
