On Monday, Jan. 11, at 7 a.m., the 2010 California State University, Chico Traditional Winter Community Service Project, named the “Catalyst Blitz Build,” will begin the first day of its weeklong prefabrication for the building of two 840-square-foot transitional housing units to be built at 1321 Ivy St. starting Jan. 16.

A student leadership group from CSU, Chico, consisting of 20 students within the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management, have been working on the project for over nine months. With the guidance of the Industry Advisory Board for the College of ECC Community Service Projects, made up of Gage Chrysler from Modern Building Inc, Pat Conroy of Conroy Construction Inc. and Howard Slater of Slater & Son Inc., students from CSU, Chico planned and organized many aspects of the project including prefabrication activities.

During the week of prefabrication there will be between 60 to 80 students at the University Farm Pavilion prefabricating all of the walls for the homes, which will then be transported to the site on Jan. 13. The first two days will be dedicated entirely to wall construction and framing. Other activities taking place throughout the week include siding preparation, building gable ends and building a complete mock-up of both of the units.

The last day of prefabrication week will be a daylong training session for students where industry representatives and teachers will provide instruction on various skill sets such as framing, electrical, HVAC, roofing, plumbing and window installation. The preparation during the prefabrication week will aid in completing the nine-day Blitz Build beginning Jan. 16.
