The Orion, California State University, Chico’s student newspaper, has again garnered top honors at the National College Journalism Convention.

For the third straight year, The Orion won first place for general excellence for four-year weekly college and university newspapers. The Orion also brought home the first-place trophy at the convention in 2009 in San Diego and in 2008 in San Francisco, and it has placed either first or second in the competition for five consecutive years, said Dave Waddell, The Orion’s faculty adviser.

The 26th annual convention, sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press and held Feb. 25-28 at the Phoenix Wyndham hotel, attracted hundreds of college newspaper staffers from throughout the United States and Canada.

Finishing behind The Orion among university weeklies were the Old Gold and Black from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., second place; the Minaret from the University of Tampa, third place; the DU Clarion from the University of Denver, fourth place; and Excalibur from York University in Toronto, fifth place.

Managing Editor Jennifer Siino of Fair Oaks and Art Director Mark Rojas of San Diego accepted the latest award on behalf of The Orion staff.

“It’s always an ego boost when we go to the conference and walk away with that nice metal trophy,” Siino said. “We’ve started a collection in the newsroom so our staff can look up and see our achievements. They’re not stuck in some stuffy bookcase; they’re right here, cheering us on.”

Siino said college journalists throughout the country recognize The Orion’s achievements in national competitions.

“It’s funny because typically when I say I’m from Chico State, people say ‘party school,’” Siino said. “But in the college media world, people say ‘The Orion? That’s a great paper!’ It’s wonderful to know that we’re doing some good for the University’s image, even if we’re only changing the opinions of other journalism students.”

The Orion, established in 1975, is part of CSU, Chico’s nationally accredited department of journalism.
