During the rally, students will have the opportunity to sign their names on a banner that says, “WE WILL FIGHT FOR CSU CHICO!” The banner will be hung on an outside wall of the Bell Memorial Union. During this time students will also be able to write letters to political representatives, paint their faces and apply temporary tattoos that echo the message of the banner.
Scheduled speakers for the rally include CSU, Chico President Paul Zingg, California State Student Association President Steve Dixon, Trustee Bob Linscheid and several students. At the conclusion of the rally, students will march through downtown Chico to City Plaza.
Since the beginning of the spring semester, Luis Munoz, director of M.E.Ch.A, and Amro Jayousi, Associated Students director of legislative affairs, have been holding coalition meetings for the action rally. These meetings consist of other students who feel strongly about the state of CSU, Chico and higher education, and they have been planning and promoting the rally.
Developed by Amro Jayousi, the vision of the rally reads as follows: During the past year, students have been subjected to the systematic destruction of their educational system. Political leaders have for far too long continued to ignore the needs of students and have failed to prioritize public higher education. As a result of their inaction and inattention, academic quality, student access and student affordability have all been jeopardized.
The Action Rally for Chico State is designed to mobilize the student body and the entire university community to speak with one voice in resistance to and disapproval of the violations of the right and promise of higher education.
