The Professional Sales Program (PSP) in the College of Business, California State University, Chico, is hosting the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition on Saturday, April 17. Students from six Western colleges, including CSU, Chico, will compete in simulated sales situations based on real companies and typical sales challenges for those companies.

The competition, formerly hosted by Arizona State University, will continue to be hosted by CSU, Chico in coming years. PSP director Timothy Heinze and event-planning intern Gillian Leeds organized the event. Leeds was responsible for all aspects of the competition, from arranging for a site, catering and technology, to soliciting corporate sponsorship, setting up corporate training classes, developing the content of the competitive events and developing and hosting the competition Web site.

Four marketing students from PSP and 16 students from other universities will compete. CSU, Chico students Jennifer Cissell, Brittany Fortune, Lindsey Hoag and Gillian Leeds have prepared for the competition throughout the spring semester, including attending sales training classes provided by the event’s platinum sponsors, Liberty Mutual and ADP.

The daylong competition, taking place in the BMU, consists of ten 15-minute sets of presentations in the morning and afternoon. The participants will break for lunch and a keynote speech by John Rusk of Liberty Mutual at 1 p.m. An awards dinner will be held in the evening.

“Hosting the Western States Collegiate Sales competition represents a big step forward for the Professional Sales Program at Chico State,” said Heinze. “The PSP has offered students the chance to earn an accredited professional sales certificate, and the addition of the competition now offers the PSP increased visibility and the opportunity to advance the field of professional sales across the western United States.”

Established in 2005, the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition is a venue for students, company recruiters and faculty to interact in a spirit of competition, collegiality and professionalism. Corporate sponsors of the event include ADP, Liberty Mutual, TEK Systems, Federated Insurance, Northwestern Mutual and Enterprise Rent-a-Car.
