Ability First Sports Camp Celebrates Its 25th Year

California State University, Chico’s Ability First Sports camp, a weeklong overnight camp for youth aged 8–17, celebrates its 25th year this summer. Thirty-five youth with disabilities will come from California, Nevada and Oregon for the camp that will run June 19–25. They will stay in a campus residence hall and participate in competitive athletics, recreational programming, and health and nutrition education.

Computer Science Students Finish Fifth in Nation in World Finals of ‘Battle of the Brains’

Three California State University, Chico computer science students competed against 104 other top computing teams from around the world in the “Battle of the Brains” held in Orlando May 27–31. They finished 59th among international competitors and fifth among 18 U.S. teams in the IBM-sponsored Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC).

Computer Science Students Headed for World Finals of ‘Battle of the Brains’

Four California State University, Chico computer science students headed for Orlando Tuesday to compete in the World Finals of the “Battle of the Brains” this coming weekend. The IBM-sponsored International Collegiate Programming Contest, which was to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt in February, was moved to Florida as a result of the popular uprising.

Human Powered Vehicle Excels at Western Competition

A mechanical engineering team from California State University, Chico, joined other teams of skilled engineering students from across the Western United States at the annual Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) Challenge at Montana State University. The competition, sponsored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, was held May 13–15. The charge to the teams was to create a fast and efficient, and in Chico’s case, utilitarian, vehicle.

Rural Teacher Pathway Program Aims to Increase Number of Teachers for At-Risk Populations

The Chico Rural Teacher Pathway at California State University, Chico recently funded for $500,000 by CalGrip (California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention), is a two-year program designed to recruit 30 high school seniors each year who may have the desire, but perhaps not the means, to become credentialed schoolteachers. The students will be recruited from regional populations where students are least likely to receive higher education degrees or teaching certificates.

Recording Arts Students Place Second in National Competition

Five recording arts majors in the Department of Music, California State University, Chico, received the second-highest score in the 2011 Shure Fantastic Scholastic Recording Competition. Elliott Eicheldinger, Ian Davidson, Fernando Macias-Jimenez, Mitchell Bohanan and Todd Simonson worked through intersession to produce the recording that garnered them runner-up to the Grand Prize.

Hikes at the Ecological Reserve Will Begin in Late March

Nutrition Project Will Encourage Families of Young Children to Use Locally Grown Foods

Chico and surrounding areas have an abundance of locally grown fruit and produce, including ethnic produce. The Center for Nutrition and Activity Promotion (CNAP), California State University, Chico, has just received $149,970 for two years to explore ways to encourage immigrant and refugee families with K-2 children to increase consumption of these locally grown foods.

Artifacts from several shipwrecks recovered by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration research vessel Hi’ialakaihave arrived at California State University, Chico to be documented, conserved and analyzed. Professor Georgia Fox, director of the Department of Anthropology’s Heritage Resources Conservation Laboratory (HRCL), is the archaeological conservator on two completed projects, with a third underway.

Cerebral palsy hasn’t kept D.J. Gregory from accomplishing great things. In fact, it has enabled him to be a model of courage and vision to millions. Gregory is best known to followers of the PGA Golf Tour for walking every round and every hole of the tour in 2008—988 miles and 3,256 holes. He is visiting Chico on Tuesday, Feb. 15, to present a major gift to Ability First Youth Sports Camp at California State University, Chico. Northeastern California Small Business Development Center Receives Grant to Help Create Jobs

The Northeastern California Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at California State University, Chico has received a grant for $616,586 to expand access to programs to help entrepreneurs start or grow their businesses and create jobs. The grant to the Northeastern California SBDC is one of six grants that are part of $50 million in funding included in the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 signed by President Obama last September.

Tibetan Monk Returns to Create Rare Sand Mandala

Venerable Lama Losang Samten created two sand mandalas in Chico, one at Butte College and another at California State University, Chico, in spring 2008. He will return to create another mandala in the atrium of the Bell Memorial Union on the CSU, Chico campus. Samten, a Tibetan monk, will begin work on the Mandala of Compassion on Feb. 14 and finish on March 5.

Former CSU, Chico Sustainability Director Publishes Book on Climate Change

The new book “Rapid Climate Change” addresses some of the hardest questions surrounding the challenges of climate change. Published this month, the supplemental text for students was written by Scott G. McNall, California State University, Chico sociology professor and former director of the Institute for Sustainable Development. CSU, Chico Continuing Education Marketing Team Wins Gold in National Competition

The California State University, Chico Regional and Continuing Education team took home two awards at the 96th annual University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPECA) Awards held in Toronto. The awards recognize the best of marketing and promotional pieces in the field of professional, continuing and online education and were given in a number of categories, ranging from entire campaigns to individual media. Continuing Education took gold in the collateral material category and a bronze award in print pieces. Both awards won for colleges with fewer than 25,000 enrollees.

A Visit by the Harlem Gospel Choir Highlights Black History Month

Black History Month will be celebrated during the month of February at California State University, Chico. It is an annual celebration of achievements by Black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role they have played in American history. There will be movies, discussions, a “rent party,” a performance by a drum and dance ensemble from Haiti and a performance by the Harlem Gospel Choir. The world-famous choir will perform in Laxson Auditorium on Feb. 24.
