Model United Nations Students Give Stellar Performance

Students participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) course at California State University, Chico brought home the Distinguished Delegation award from the Northwest MUN conference in Seattle. While most students went home to their families for the celebration of Thanksgiving week, 33 Chico students traveled 13 hours on a bus for the three-day conference, held Nov. 16–18.

The CSU, Chico Regional & Continuing Education marketing team received a top award in the 2012 University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPECA) Marketing Awards. Awards were announced at the 21st annual UPCEA National Marketing Awards, held in New Orleans Nov. 7-9. The awards recognize the best of marketing and promotion in the field of professional, continuing and online education, and span a number of categories ranging from entire campaigns to individual media. There were over 249 submissions from 53 institutions.

Annual Economic Forecast Conference Coming in January

The Center for Economic Development at California State University, Chico will hold its 13th annual Economic Forecast Conference at the Gold Country Casino in Oroville on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013. The conference has grown well beyond the original tri-county area and now serves as the leading economic forecast conference of the North State. Attendees will be coming from as far north as the Oregon border and as far south as the Central Valley region.

Food Day Today Highlights Hunger in California

Today, Wednesday, Oct. 24, is Food Day, a day to highlight the movement for healthy, affordable and sustainable food. Food Day is being celebrated in Chico with an afternoon of local, healthy food; a documentary screening; and a lively panel of experts covering hot topics such as food policy, local produce, eating healthy foods and hunger. The celebration begins at 1 p.m. in Selvester’s Café on the California State University, Chico campus. Professors Complete Report On Butte County’s Alternative Custody Supervision Program

A team of California State University, Chico State political science professors and criminal justice interns released a preliminary report this week with results that suggest that the Butte County Sheriff’s Alternative Custody Supervision (ACS) program shows several promising trends for public safety and rehabilitation. The Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) developed and implemented the ACS program to manage the massive influx of county prisoners generated by California’s 2011 Realignment Legislation Addressing Public Safety Act (AB109).

Ethics Bowl Team Headed to Nationals

For those who want fresh, locally grown food, a helpful tool is now available online, created by California State University, Chico faculty and staff in partnership with the Northern California Regional Land Trust. The Department of Geography and Planning, with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and in partnership with the land trust, created a ‘foodshed’ map that shows the movements of foodstuffs in their journey from producer to consumer.

Tree Cross Section and Dendrochronology Workshop

Witness the unveiling of a natural specimen from Chico’s past…

Beginning at 12:15 p.m. on Dec. 8, the Gateway Science Museum will reveal a 4-foot-diameter tree cross section from a 115-year-old valley oak that grew in what is now the front lawn of Bidwell Mansion.  From this cross section, viewers can read the story of the tree’s life – from when it put on its first annual growth ring in 1893 to when it fell in 2008.

‘Daily Show’ Writer Jason Ross to Speak on Constitution Day

Six-time Primetime Emmy Award winning writer Jason Ross will speak on Friday, September 14, in the BMU Auditorium at 5:00 p.m. as a part of California State University, Chico’s annual Constitution Day celebration. Ross has been a staff writer at “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” since 2002. He is also one of the writers of the show’s two best-selling books, “America: The Book” (2004) and “Earth: The Book” (2010).

Summer Research Institute Welcomes High School Students for First Time

The Chemistry Summer Research Institute at California State University, Chico, which successfully teams undergraduate chemistry students with professors in original research projects, is in its 12th year, though it has only officially been called CSRI since 2007. This year, for the first time, four local high school students are an integral part of CSRI.

Sara Cooper Receives NEA Translation Fellowship

Sara E. Cooper, Department of Foreign Language and Literature, California State University, has received one of 16 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Translation Fellowships for $12,500. The 16 works selected include drama, poetry and prose. The texts range from classical to contemporary literature from 14 countries from Central America to the Indian subcontinent and involve 10 different languages.
