Student Engineers Compete in International NASA Competition

Dateline: 06-26-2012

An engineering team from California State University, Chico competed against U.S. and international undergraduate and graduate student teams in the third annual Lunabotics Mining Competition. The event was held at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Cape Canaveral, Florida, May 21-26. Six members of “Team BEAR” from Chico came back without an award, but they did come back with feelings of pride in their accomplishment and enthusiasm for the experience.

Friends of the Herbarium at Avenue 9 Gallery

California State University, Chico students have won the national St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital fundraising championship for the fifth time in six years. The Up ’til Dawn event, held in November 2011, passed the $1,250,000 cumulative total. Meeting this mark during CSU, Chico’s 125th Anniversary year makes it especially meaningful.

The Orion Wins 15 Awards at College Newspaper Convention

The Orion, California State University, Chico’s award-winning student newspaper, won 15 awards at the California College Media Association’s (CCMA) April Convention, including the General Excellence for a Weekly Newspaper award for 2011–2012. The CCMA is a statewide organization that works to develop communication leadership among media students and advisors and to recognize excellence in college journalism. A record 37 colleges and universities entered the competition with more than 100 entries.

Professional Development Grant Receives Second Round of Funding to Serve Teachers in 33 Inland Counties

Teachers’ PD INC, a collaborative professional development project, was recently awarded funding of $1 million for a second cycle. The project will serve approximately 120 more teachers in the inland California region, the 33 counties from San Bernardino to Modoc and Siskiyou. Lead partners are California State University, Chico and the Yuba City Unified School District. The multi-year project is part of the Improving Teacher Quality Program.

Twenty-one California State University, Chico students participating in the Model United Nations (MUN) course won multiple top awards at the National Model United Nations Conference in New York, April 1–5. For the fifth time in six years, the Chico delegation was named one of 34 Outstanding Delegations out of more than 400 by the staff of the National MUN. The delegation, consisting of 21 students and representing the State of Qatar, also won outstanding position papers on four of 10 committees in which they competed and were named by their peers in two other committees as an outstanding delegation.

Students Win Top Award for 13th Year at Prestigious Manufacturing Engineers Event

Students from California State University, Chico’s Sustainable Manufacturing Program won the Grand Prize for the 13th time at the prestigious 2012 WESTEC (Western Tool Exposition and Conference) Manufacturing Challenge on March 27. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) hosted the challenge. The students won the competition by creating a manufacturing system for producing a sustainable composite skateboard deck, with trucks and axles.

The film was shot on location in Barcelona and Madrid, Spain, and explores Spanish history, culture and regional identity through the intense and world-renowned soccer rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

CSU, Chico Students Receive Prizes in Kruschke Piano Competition

California State University, Chico piano students Megumi Ito and Naoko Terakado earned two of the three prizes offered in the Earl R. and Marilyn Ann Kruschke Piano Performance Competition on Saturday, March 3. Ito received the first prize of $2,000, and Naoko Terakado received a special Victor Kosenko prize of $100. Nicholas Pietromonaco, Humboldt State University, won second prize and received $500.

Nationally Recognized Civil Litigator to Speak at CSU, Chico

Jan Schlichtmann, one of the country’s eminent plaintiff’s attorneys, will speak on Wednesday, March 14 at California State University, Chico. Schlichtmann received national recognition for his representation of eight Woburn, Mass. families against W.R. Grace and Beatrice foods for contamination of the city water supply. Jonathan Harr’s “A Civil Action,” which told the story, became a best-selling non-fiction book and then a movie.

A new and expanded edition of "Wildflowers of Table Mountain, a Naturalist's Guide" by Albin Bills and Samantha Mackey Hillaire has more photos of wildflowers and even more information about the plants of Table Mountain than the first edition. The environmental impact of supervolcano eruptions is the subject of a public lecture by Clive R. Neal as part of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership Distinguished Lecturer Series. The lecture will be held at 7 p.m., Feb. 20 in Colusa Hall Room 100A on the California State University, Chico campus. The presentation is free and open to the public.
