Record numbers of dollars raised and students participating are goals for this year’s Up ‘til Dawn to be held Monday, Nov. 4, in Acker Gym from 4 p.m. to midnight.

For the 13th year, CSU, Chico students will gather to write letters raising funds for Memphis-based St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which conducts research and provides treatment free of charge to families for childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Up ‘til Dawn is California State University, Chico’s single largest student-led fundraiser, typically attracting more than 2,000 students to participate and raising more than $100,000 each year. Organizers hope to attract 3,000 students this year.

Last year, students raised $112,000 in a national fundraising competition with other universities, placing second to University of Memphis. CSU, Chico has been national champion five of the past seven years. In 2010, St. Jude honored CSU, Chico for reaching the $1 million mark in fundraising faster than any other university in the country.

The theme for this year’s Up ‘til Dawn is Carnival for a Cure. Entertainment during the letter-writing event will include performances by CSU, Chico dance and acrobatics teams and music by DJ Prodigy. Free food and drink will be invited.

Prizes at Up ‘til Dawn will include free spring 2014 tuition, a two-night stay in Tahoe, an Aaron Rodgers signed football, an iPad Mini and a $250 Visa gift card. A patient from St. Jude will be attending the event to talk with students about the importance of their fundraising.

Student Jaypinderpal Virdee, CSU, Chico Up 'til Dawn executive director, said this year’s goal is to raise between $150,000 and $200,000. He said students and other campus community members can just show up to participate or can sign in at chicostateuptildawn@gmail.com.

CSU, Chico students on the Up ‘til Dawn executive board are Matt Riebe, Matt Fukuhara, Sydney Jacobs, Elana Linker, Stephanie Quintana, Francisco Nava, L.T. Piver, Ian Gilbert, Tracie Wymer, Allison Palmer, Simone Abbey, Ashley Pipkin and Virdee.
