California State University, Chico manufacturing professor Daren Otten has worked with dozens of entrepreneurs over the years, but none has found as much success as Chris Johnson of Rapid Ramen. Johnson, a Sacramento businessman, recently landed a major deal with billionaire Mark Cuban on ABC’s “Shark Tank” and is now fast-tracking distribution of a product designed by Otten and a team of CSU, Chico students.

Volunteers Clean Up Sacramento River After Labor Day
A group of student volunteers from California State University, Chico floated down the Sacramento River Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. for a cleanup event. Volunteers were from on-campus departments that included Associated Students (AS) Sustainability, AS Recycling and AS Adventure Outings. Butte County officials and California State Parks were invaluable partners in the cleanup effort. Donations for the cleanup were provided by Chico’s Lowe’s Home Improvement and Mangrove Round Table Pizza.
Book in Common, “The Yellow Birds,” Kick-off in City Plaza Sept. 12
The first in a series of events exploring “The Yellow Birds,” the 2013-14 Book in Common, will be held Thursday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Chico’s City Plaza. The Book in Common is a joint project of California State University, Chico; Butte College; the City of Chico; and Butte County.
