Mike Ward, dean of the California State University, Chico College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management, was awarded the 2012 Business Advocate of the Year Award from the Chico Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the chamber’s 75th Annual Dinner and Community Awards Ceremony.

Mike WardThe business advocate award was established in 2000 to recognize the Chamber of Commerce member who has “done the most to move forward the chamber’s business advocacy agenda,” said Katie Simmons, the chamber’s president and CEO. That agenda includes encouraging positive interaction between CSU, Chico and the local business community.

Ward is credited with connecting the University to several local businesses, including manufacturing company Transfer Flow Inc., which because of Ward’s work hires CSU, Chico engineering interns and works closely with engineering students on their senior projects, Simmons said.

Ward has served as dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management since 2008 and also served as interim dean of the College of Business from August 2011 to June 2012. He first came to CSU, Chico in 1988.

His award was one of seven given out at this year’s ceremony, titled “Celebrating Leadership: Past, Present and Future,” at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
