Take a step back in history Wednesday, Feb. 27, at California State University, Chico’s eighth annual Harlem Renaissance Rent Party, hosted by the Cross-Cultural Leadership Center, the School of the Arts, the Black Faculty and Staff Association and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Harlen Adams Theatre stage, located in Performing Arts Center 144.

This event is a re-enactment of parties held to raise money for rent during the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural movement from the 1920s and 1930s in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood. CSU, Chico’s Department of Theatre will set the mood with a unique set design, and partygoers are asked to come in costume, the best of which will be awarded prizes.

“The theatre department is wonderful about recreating the imagery of what it looked like then,” said Tray Robinson, director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, “and we ask people to dress up as someone from the Harlem Renaissance era that they admire.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the event, and $5 donations are encouraged in exchange for a night of food, music and entertainment. All proceeds will go to help support The Bookstore in downtown Chico.
