California State University, Chico’s Professional Sales Team took home both team and individual first place awards and earned $2,000 in cash prizes at the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition (WSCSC) at CSU, Chico April 18–19.

Eleven universities from across the West and Midwest competed in the contest, hosted annually by the CSU, Chico College of Business’ Professional Sales Program and the Career Center. Established in 2005, the WSCSC is a venue for students, company recruiters and faculty to interact in a spirit of competition, collegiality and professionalism. This year, 16 companies attended and judged the event, which requires students to compete in two 12-minute sales “role plays” they have spent the semester preparing for.

The CSU, Chico team, composed of students Daniel Van Attenhoven, Jordan Carroll, Madalyn Groulx and Whitney Vau, placed first in overall team performance, followed by California State University, Fullerton in second and Ball State University in third.

CSU, Chico’s Van Attenhoven, a graduating senior, also placed first in individual performance, and Carroll placed third. Second place went to Zeina Itani of CSU, Fullerton. In the honorable mention category, CSU, Chico’s Groulx won the TEKsystems Award and Vau won the runner-up ADP award.

Professional Sales Program Director Timothy Heinze said the CSU, Chico team’s success can be attributed to the students’ intensive practice and the guidance of coaches Bill McGowan and Casey Donoho, both faculty in the Department of Finance and Marketing. Heinze also says special thanks is due to Megan Odom and Art Cox of the Career Center for helping manage and host the event, and to Ian McGuire and the 25 College of Business student volunteers who professionally represented the University and ensured the competition ran smoothly.
