CSU, Chico Will Hold 123rd Commencement

California State University, Chico’s 123rd Commencement will feature two graduation ceremonies for the class of 2013, Saturday, May 25, and Sunday, May 26, along with a number of other graduation events and celebrations leading up to the weekend.

Approximately 1,200 students are expected to receive bachelor’s degrees on Saturday and approximately 1,700 students Sunday in the University Stadium. The ceremonies will start promptly at 9 a.m., will take about two hours each and will be held rain or shine. Tickets are not required for admission.

Approximately 250 students who have completed graduate programs are expected to participate in the Master's Commencement Friday, May 24. Two ceremonies will be held, at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., in Laxson Auditorium. Tickets are required to attend.

In addition, Wendell Lundberg, 1953 CSU, Chico alumnus and pioneering rice grower for Lundberg Family Farms in Richvale, will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree at the Sunday, May 26, ceremony.

Lundberg Family Farms is the top grower and marketer of natural and organic rice products throughout the United States and Canada. Lundberg and his brothers, Eldon, Homer and Harlan, pioneered organic rice production and became the first farmers in America to successfully grow organic rice. Lundberg earned both his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts and a teaching credential from CSU, Chico and is a former Distinguished Alumnus for the College of Agriculture.

Saturday’s commencement exercises will include graduates from the Colleges of Communication and Education (including Liberal Studies), Humanities and Fine Arts, and Natural Sciences. Sunday’s exercises will include graduates from the Colleges of Agriculture; Behavioral and Social Sciences; Business; and Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management.

Saturday’s student speaker will be Ellie Amanda Pilecki Oliver, a graduating senior in biology. On Sunday, Kimberly Leanne Macintosh, a graduating senior in agriculture, will address the other graduates.

CSU Chancellor Timothy White and CSU Board of Trustees Chair Bob Linscheid, a CSU, Chico alumnus, are planning to attend Sunday’s commencement. CSU Board of Trustees member Ian Ruddell, a student trustee on the board, is a graduating senior in multicultural and gender studies and will be taking part in ceremonies Sunday.
