Interim Deans Appointed in Two Colleges

Interim deans have been appointed in California State University, Chico’s College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management (ECC) and College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSS).

Eddie Vela, current associate dean of BSS, will begin his new position July 15, 2013. He replaces Gayle Hutchinson, who has served as dean of the college since 2007 and has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at CSU, Channel Islands.

Ben Juliano, the current associate dean of ECC, will begin his new position on Aug.1, 2013. He replaces Mike Ward, who has served as dean of the college since 2009. Ward also served as interim dean of the College of Business from 2011 to 2012. Ward plans to enter the Faculty Early Retirement Program and teach in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering and Sustainable Manufacturing.

Juliano joined CSU, Chico and Department of Computer Science faculty in 1998. For the past three years, he has been ECC's associate dean and has served as interim chair and graduate coordinator of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 2011. He is also the co-director of the Institute for Research in Intelligent Systems, an interdisciplinary project center in the college.

Vela joined CSU, Chico and Department of Psychology faculty in 1989. For the past five years, he has been BSS’s associate dean, during which time he led the college's assessment efforts. He has also served as the chair of the Student Evaluation of Teaching Committee and director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. Vela was named CSU, Chico Outstanding Professor of the Year in 1992 and Outstanding Teacher in 2002.
