Prestigious Federal Study Abroad Scholarships Awarded to Six CSU, Chico Students
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Study Abroad and International Exchanges
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship provides students in financial need with up to $5,000 to apply to their study abroad program costs. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the program aims to diversify the students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go. Recipients must be receiving a federal Pell Grant, and preference is given to students in non-traditional study-abroad countries, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with disabilities.
Four of the six CSU, Chico scholarship recipients will study abroad for the full 2013-2014 academic year, with one traveling abroad this summer and one in the fall. Their host countries include Spain, Ghana, Thailand, South Korea, China and Japan. They are among 850 undergraduate students from 324 colleges and universities across the United States to receive the competitive grant.
For five years running, the national Institute of International Education (IIE) has ranked the CSU, Chico study abroad program third in the nation among master’s-granting institutions for number of long-term (year-long) participants. Chico State was also ranked second by the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) for the number of students it sent abroad in the 2012-13 academic year.
“This year, our office certified more applications for the Gilman Scholarship than ever before, and it is quite impressive that so many of our students are receiving the award,” said Jennifer Gruber, study abroad advisor for the University. “These students will join 252 other CSU, Chico students in traversing the world this summer and fall; we know that they will gain tremendously from this experience and represent our campus and community well.”

- Bethany Castillo, health science major, Chiang Mai, Thailand (summer 2013; $3,000)
