California State University, Chico’s chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, an honorary organization for financial information students and professionals, has partnered with the Community Action Agency of Butte County Inc. (CAABCI) to provide free tax-preparation services starting Saturday, Feb. 1.

The tax preparation is available to anyone who earned less than $52,000 during 2013. Services on the CSU, Chico campus will be provided each Saturday in February and March 1, 8 and 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bell Memorial Union.

The free services are provided through a partnership with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The program provides online training to certify volunteers to provide tax-preparation services to those in the community who need it most. Nearly 30 students will volunteer their time as well as several CSU, Chico several staff members.

Tax-preparation volunteers must pass tax exams at several levels. These exams are provided through the IRS Link and Learn online training site. The training, field and volunteer experience are valuable resume builders for CSU, Chico students, said accounting student Gabriel Penfield, director of the VITA-Beta Alpha Psi.

“We’ve been asking students to do the most advanced training, which is pretty detailed,” he said. “For accounting students, it really helps to do hands-on tax preparation and get real tax-season experience. Plus, it’s a great service for the community.”

This marks the third year that CSU, Chico has been a partner in VITA, and the second year the University has had a site on campus organized by students.

Those interested in the free service should bring

  • A copy of their 2013 tax return
  • Social Security and/or ITIN cards for the entire family
  • Photo identification
  • Wages and earnings statements (W-2, 1099, 1098)
  • Documentation for deductions and credits
