The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), District VII, has announced that California State University, Chico received a 2013 Award of Excellence in the area of digital communications and social media.

CSU, Chico’s entry, “Crowdsourcing the Chico State Class of 2013 Commencement Story,” won the silver award from the CASE judges, who represented 12 colleges, universities and secondary schools.

CSU, Chico 2013 graduates and their families were encouraged to share their Commencement experience by posting stories and photos on Twitter and Instagram using a special hashtag, #Chico2013. The content was shared in real time across the University’s social media outlets, as well as curated and posted on the University website and a special edition of the Inside Chico State e-newsletter sent to faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the University.

The promotion resulted in a conversation showcasing the Commencement experience, as well as allowing our community of current students, alumni, parents, faculty and staff to join in the celebration as it was happening. It brought more than 150 Tweets and 550 Instagram photos, engaged more than 10,000 Facebook users and generated more than one-quarter of all the visits to the Inside Chico State website.

Digital Media Specialist Kate Post, Digital Communications Coordinator Anna Harris, Public Affairs Coordinator Sarah Langford, all of the Office of Public Affairs and Publications, and Alumni and Parent Relations Director Sue Anderson collaborated on the project.

A “#Chico2013” site aggregating social media activity is available at bit.ly/Chico2013.

CSU, Chico has won a wide variety of CASE awards in recent years, from design for the Chico Experience Week pocket media guide to the digital version of Chico Statements magazine. Since 2008, CSU, Chico has won 18 gold, silver or bronze CASE awards.

CASE District VII includes Arizona, California, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada, Northern Mariana Islands and Utah. CASE provides advancement professionals with support, educational programming and current best practices in the industry.
