Professor’s Research on Role of Fathers Is Topic of BSS Colloquium
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Shepherd will give a talk titled “Rough-and-Tumble Play: Fathers' Contributions to Children's Development.” She will discuss parent-child attachment and current research on the role fathers play in children’s social and emotional development.
A poster session will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Shepherd will speak from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
The BSS Faculty Colloquium Series is an annual event in which the college honors a BSS faculty member for his or her nationally or internationally recognized scholarship.
Honored in 2010 by CSU, Chico’s Faculty Recognition and Support Committee for significant professional achievement, Shepherd is actively involved in new research on the unique role that fathers play in the development of their children.
Shepherd’s multiple publications and presentations have moved from the study of general parenting to a focus on children’s attachment to their fathers. Traditional research on attachment has centered primarily on children’s attachment to their mothers. She is a contributing editor and chapter co-author of two special issues and a book on the role of fathers in the development of children: “Emerging Topics on Father Attachment: Considerations in Theory, Context and Development.”
