The Gateway Science Museum will be holding a special preparation workshop Saturday, Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., to prepare people for the nationwide, annual Christmas Bird Count taking place Saturday, Dec. 18 at Chico Creek Nature Center.

Gateway Science Museum logoAltacal Audubon President Scott Huber will lead the workshop. Participants will learn about the history and purpose of the Christmas Bird Counts, receive instruction on protocol for the official bird count and most importantly, learn identification tips for the birds most commonly seen during the census. The Christmas Bird Count has been an annual celebration of winter wildlife nationally for more than a century, and takes place between Dec. 14 – Jan. 5. The Chico Christmas Bird Count has been recording winter bird abundance for more than 50 years.

Following Huber’s discussion, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., participants will be able to complete a preliminary count on the grounds of the Museum and the CSU, Chico campus.

All workshop attendees will be invited to join in the official Chico Christmas Bird Count, Dec. 18, from 11 a.m. to noon, where they will be teamed up with an experienced bird counter. Huber and other bird counters will conduct the official CBC survey of the CSU, Chico campus, starting and ending at the Gateway Science Museum. Timing may shift slightly. Visitors wanting to participate should arrive at the museum by 10:45 a.m. New counters may also want to join the Red Bluff Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 19 or the Oroville Christmas Bird Count on Jan. 2, 2011.

Participants should wear warm clothing and be prepared for the possibility of rain. Binoculars will be available to borrow or counters may bring their own.
