Book in Common Discussions Focus on Water Issues

On Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Book in Common Group and the Butte Environmental Council are hosting a forum titled “Ethical Issues and Water: An Interfaith Dialogue.” The event will be held in CSU, Chico’s Colusa Hall, Room 100B, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
The forum will focus on the spiritual and stewardship issues that surround water, including water as an element essential to all life, as a human right and as a contentious public policy issue in California and beyond.
Speakers include CSU, Chico professor Bruce Grelle, Department of Religious Studies; Shirley Adams, Christian and founder of Bridging the Gap; Lin Jensen, Buddhist and author of “Deep Down Things: The earth in celebration and dismay”; Ali Sarsour, who will speak about water and Islam; and Marty Dunlap, attorney and water issue mediator.
On Feb. 19, a panel discussion will be held on the topic: "The Tuscan Aquifer and Its Sustainable Uses." The event will be 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Colusa Hall, Room 100B.
The panel will discuss the historical, current and projected uses of the Tuscan Aquifer, the principal groundwater resource of the Sacramento Valley, and the source of the City of Chico’s drinking water. Topics will include the hydrology of the aquifer and ongoing studies to better understand the aquifer for its sustainable management.
Panelists include Debbie Spangler, engineering geologist, Department of Water Resources, State of California; Christina Buck, water resources scientist, Department of Water and Resource Conservation, Butte County; Peter Bonacich, assistant district manager, California Water Service Company, Chico District; Steffen Mehl, associate professor, Department of Civil Engineering Department, CSU, Chico; Eric Houk, associate professor, College of Agriculture, CSU, Chico; and Todd Greene, associate professor, Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences, CSU, Chico.
