University Named Founding Member of Climate Resiliency Pact
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Developed by Second Nature, a nonprofit that promotes sustainability in higher education, the alliance is a pact among colleges and universities to solve some of the biggest problems presented by climate change. Institutions that signed on as original signatories to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) and have demonstrated leadership in the field are being asked to join, Zingg said.
“This initiative will help colleges connect the dots to address sustainability issues,” he said. “It will empower us to take the lead among local community partners to take our original commitment to the next level.”
Zingg was among 12 original signatories of the ACUPCC in 2007, which committed schools to accelerating the education, research and community engagement needed to slow and stop human-induced climate change. The newly formed alliance is the next step in that commitment, Zingg said, and will help campuses move from focusing on climate-change mitigation to becoming climate-change resilient.
His announcement coincided with CSU, Chico’s This Way to Sustainability IX, which began March 6 and concludes tomorrow, March 8, at the University Farm. The nation’s largest student-run conference, the event has drawn more than 1,400 attendees and 150 speakers for programming and events focused on achieving a sustainable future.
CSU, Chico has established a reputation as a leader in sustainability. CSU, Chico is one of just 21 schools in the United States and Canada named to The Princeton Review’s 2014 Green Honor Roll and has been named by both Yahoo! News and The Daily Green one of the “greenest” campuses in America. In November 2013, the University achieved a gold rating in a comprehensive review from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. It was recently named a finalist in Second Nature’s Climate Leadership Awards.
