Students Seek 2017 Community Service Project Proposals

Students from California State University, Chico’s College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management are seeking proposals for their 2017 Community Service Project. 

Blitz Build project in 2014Next fall, students from across disciplines will spend months organizing and preparing for a week of service over their winter or spring breaks. They are guided by a community advisory board and faculty from the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management (ECC).

In 2015, about 40 students, faculty and contractors reroofed and added heating and cooling systems to the 6,000 square-foot Veterans Memorial Hall in Durham.

Other projects have included building two duplexes for the Chico Salvation Army (2014); barn raising at the local Patrick Ranch Museum (2013); rebuilding homes in tornado-struck Joplin, Missouri (2012); building homes for Catalyst Domestic Violence Services in Chico (2010-2011); responding to the needs of fire survivors in Concow, California (2009); and repairing houses damaged by Hurricane Katrina (2006-2008).

Guidelines for 2017 project proposals are

  • Benefiting organizations must be not-for-profit and classified as charitable, educational or cultural.
  • Funding needed for tools, equipment, materials and supportive services can be included in project requests and will be considered during the selection process.
  • Applicants must complete the CSU, Chico ECC Application for Community Service Projects form, found online at http://tinyurl.com/j28geq8. Be clear and specific in the application.
  • Email the completed form to Department of Construction Management lecturer Alan Bond at adbond@csuchico.edu.
  • Applications will be accepted through Monday, Aug. 15, 2016. A project will be selected shortly thereafter.
