California State University, Chico has garnered international recognition from a national educational organization for its 125th anniversary celebration.

The 125th anniversary program, which ran during 2012, received a silver award in the Year-long Special Events category of the International Circle of Excellence Awards.

Hosted by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the awards program recognizes outstanding work by colleges and universities in advancement services, alumni relations, communications, fundraising and marketing. A panel of experts selected CSU, Chico’s program from among 13 entries.

The gold award went to the University of Melbourne in Australia for the 150th anniversary of its medical school. No bronze award was given.

CASE is one of the largest international associations of education institutions, serving more than 3,400 universities, colleges, schools and related organizations in 74 countries. The organization provides advancement professionals with support, educational programming and current best practices in the industry.

Featuring some ongoing activities, CSU, Chico’s 125th anniversary program publicly celebrated the University’s founding in 1887, when Chico founder John Bidwell donated eight acres of his cherry orchard to secure the northern branch of the State Normal School. Much more than a year-long celebration, however, the program highlighted CSU, Chico’s contributions to the region and state, underscored its most important initiatives and values, showcased accomplishments of the campus community and invited friends and community members to its beautiful campus.

An array of initiatives helped to tell the University’s 125-year story, including My Service Counts, which challenged the campus community to perform 125,000 hours of volunteer service in 2012; the Chico State Expo 125, a community-wide open house attracting 3,000 attendees; and the Wildcat Cruiser, a retail line of limited-edition bicycles to generate scholarship funds. Other activities included burial of a 125th anniversary time capsule, an event honoring campus and community veterans and a rousing, 1880s-infused game of Town Ball attended by more 1,200 students and parents during the annual Chico State Family Weekend.

Besides the international accolade, the 125th anniversary also recently earned CASE recognition at the district level, receiving a gold award for Visual Identity System and a silver award for Excellence in Design: Posters.

Established in 1994, the International Circle of Excellence Awards Program is judged by professionals at schools, colleges and universities and by experts outside education. Winning projects and programs are selected based on quality, innovation, use of resources and impact. In 2012, CASE received more than 2,800 entries for consideration in 40 categories by 567 member higher education institutions, independent schools and nonprofits from around the world. Judges gave 275 bronze, silver and gold awards.
