Music Students Recognized for Service to North State
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Students in the association’s CSU, Chico chapter were recognized in the service category for their outreach to band students at regional public schools.
During the last academic year, the students traveled in groups of eight to schools throughout the North State to work with younger music students. At each school, they performed short concerts and then worked with the students in small sectionals, providing assessments and suggestions for improvement. Lastly, the older and younger students would come together to perform as a large group.
The students visited schools in four counties. The host schools included Chico, Red Bluff, Paradise, Corning Union, Portola and Quincy high schools and Shasta, Foothill, and Enterprise high schools in Redding.
CSU, Chico music education credential student Adriana Jimenez attended many of the service sessions and says the younger musicians soaked up the information they were given.
“The improvement in their performance, based on the immediate feedback we provided, was pretty incredible,” she said.
Trombone performance major Eric Bolstad said the younger musicians’ positive responses made the experience a rewarding one.
“The kids get pretty excited,” he said. “Sometimes it’s hard for them to see what happens after high school. We show them that you can still continue to play.”
CSU, Chico music professors Michelle McConkey and Lloyd Roby accompanied the students to the schools and acted as advisors.
“The high school kids get a lot out of it, and our students who want to be teachers get experience teaching,” Roby said. “It’s been really helpful for everyone involved.”
The National Association for Music Education received 44 submissions from chapters at colleges and universities in 17 states. Other award categories included music program, professional development and recruitment.
CSU, Chico’s outreach program is expected to continue next year.
