‘Wildcat Welcome’ Enhances Students’ Transition to University Life
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wildcat Welcome 2014, which begins this week, includes opportunities for new students to meet each other as well as returning students, faculty and staff. The week also includes mandatory trainings and department meetings for incoming freshmen and transfers.
This week’s events follow the most successful Summer Orientation program ever on campus, where a record 6,522 students and family members, 900 more than last year, visited campus and prepared for enrollment.
Last year’s Wildcat Welcome debuted the Faculty Mentor Welcome for New Students, sponsored by the First-Year Experience Program. On Saturday, Aug. 23, groups of 10 to 20 students will meet with a faculty member for 50 minutes to get the answers any questions they have about university life and discuss important things they can do to be successful. More than 80 faculty participated last year, and a greater number is expected this year.
Incoming students began moving into the residence halls today, Aug. 18. Move-in will continue through Thursday, Aug. 21. University Housing staff will be assisting families and providing activities each night for the new campus residents.
Once again this year, Wildcat Welcome will feature a Trip ’n’ Dip group outing and swim in Upper Bidwell Park and an introduction to downtown Chico via the Thursday Night Market. Students participating in the Thursday Night Market experience will get a complimentary dinner ticket good at one of 20 local food vendors.
The official Wildcat Welcome opening ceremony at University Stadium Friday, Aug. 22, at 9 a.m. will feature remarks from CSU, Chico President Paul Zingg and AS President Taylor Herren and a few fun surprises. Parents of incoming students will be invited to a reception at Alumni Glen taking place at the same time Friday.
A complete list of Wildcat Welcome events is at www.csuchico.edu/wildcatwelcome. Students and the campus community will be sharing their Wildcat Welcome experiences on social media using #ChicoWW.
