CSU, Chico Student Chapter of Associated General Contractors of America Wins National Contest
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Department of Construction Management
Eighty-seven Chico State students and four faculty members from the Department of Construction Management traveled to Joplin, Mo., in March 2012, to rebuild four houses destroyed by the May 2011 tornado. AGC President, Josh Payne, was the Project Leader/Project Manager for the Joplin project.
"Chico State has earned first place twice in the last three years in the AGC contest and placed among the top three for the last four years running," said David Shirah, one of the advisors to the College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management’s community service projects. "Not a small accomplishment considering we compete against all the major universities and community colleges nationwide. We truly have some amazing students with an equally amazing spirit and tradition of service to community."
The student chapter also received a check for $1,500 and was invited to present at the AGC's National Convention in Palm Springs in March next semester.
In 2011, CSU, Chico’s student AGC chapter won third place and $400 for Phase II of its “Blitz Build” for the Catalyst Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence, a continuation of its 2010 first-place winning project. In 2009, the chapter won third place for helping victims of the fires in Concow by constructing 13 storage sheds. In addition, Shirah received the AGC Outstanding Student Organization Advisor award for 2010–2011.
