Accomplishments

Top Biology presenters at the 30th Annual Student Research Competition are Charles G. Brooke, Clara Buchholtz and Gin Lawson. They will go on to the 30th CSU Annual Statewide Research Competition in Bakersfield on April 29th and 30th. Mentors for these students include professors: Dr. Emily Nuester, Dr. Donald Miller and Dr. Tag Engstrom.

Professor Shane Mayor secured a $70K supplement on his NSF award to deploy a compact and portable aerosol lidar on the coast of California in March of 2015, to observe particulate matter produced from breaking ocean waves. An article on the results was published in the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing in March, 2016.

Cindy Wolff, Director of Center for Healthy Communities (CHC), was selected for the 2016 Career Achievement Award by the University Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, for playing an essential role in the mission of the University.

Dawn Clifford, Associate Professor in Nutrition and Food Science, was featured in Today's Dietitian journal, for her Weighing in on Nondiet Approaches(opens in new window) article.

Lauren Atwell, Assistant Professor in Nutrition and Food Science, published a paper with colleagues at Oregon State University titled Associations Between Cruciferous Vegetable Intake and Selected Biomarkers Among Women Scheduled for Breast Biopsies.

Lauren Atwell, Assistant Professor in Nutrition and Food Science, published a paper with colleagues at Oregon State University titled Sulforaphane Bioavailability and Chemopreventive Activity in Women Scheduled for Breast Biopsy(opens in new window). The research for this paper was conducted as part of her dissertation.

Anna Petrova-Mayor, Associate Professor in Physics, was awarded $130,000 to update equipment(opens in new window) for lab classes she instructs, which include lasers and optic systems updates.

Nathan L. Anderson, adjunct professor in Physics, was primary author with research collaborators R. P. Vedula and A. Strachan, "Model form uncertainty versus intrinsic atomic variability in amorphous silicon oxides and nitrides"(opens in new window) in Computational Materials Science Vol. 109, pp. 124-128, 2015.

Chris Gaffney, professor in Physics, coauthored with undergraduate student Adam Catching the article "Magnetic Viscous drag for Friction Labs," accepted to publish in the journal The Physics Teacher(opens in new window), November 2015.

CHC provides an outreach for CalFresh(opens in new window), with the goal to educate and encourage eligible participants to enroll in the CalFresh program.

CHC assisted with a successful Food Day(opens in new window) and CalFresh Outreach event on campus, where a record high of CalFresh applications were completed by Chico State students. The event focused on enrolling students to receive federal food assistance, promote healthy eating and buying locally.

Associate Professor of Physics, Anna Petrova-Mayor and co-author Physics Alumni Scott Bimbal, were published in the American Journal of Physics(opens in new window), for their paper on Advanced lab on Fresnel equations(opens in new window).

CHC participated in Food Day 2015, as Chico State focuses on more, better food for students.

Stephanie Bianco, Associate Professor of Nutrition and Food Science, and Doyle Patrick published the 2^nd edition of their course book and certification on HACCP Fundamentals(opens in new window).

Dawn Clifford, Associate Professor of Nutrition and Food Science, is a co-author of Motivational Interviewing in Nutrition and Fitness(opens in new window). Publishing date is January 2016 and is currently available for pre-order.

Center for Healthy Communities (CHC) received a $250,000 grant from the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program(opens in new window) (SNAP) to help promote the use of EBT at the Chico Saturday morning market(opens in new window). Cooking demonstrations will also held at the CHC bike kitchen, to encourage eating of more fruits and vegetables.

Erik Wasinger, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, introduces a new interactive learning environment that aims to improve student success. Funding was provided by the CSU Chancellor's office program called Course Redesigned through Technology(opens in new window) and from the Josie Otwell Fund.

Rick Ford, Chair of Mathematics and Statistics, is co-author of the "Value-Added Results for Public Virtual Schools in California" (PDF) article that was published in the Educational Technology & Society Journal(opens in new window), Vol. 18, Issue 4.

Russell Shapiro and Jochen Nuester, Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences and Gordon Wolfe and Emily Fleming, Department of Biological Sciences, received a grant of $207,316 from the National Science Foundation-Major Research Institute program to purchase a new scanning electron microscope to foster research in collaborative geobiology.

Nutrition and Food Science students Abigail Roche and Yanling (Amy) Zhao and staff members Cindy Wolff and Keiko Goto published "Bonding and bridging social and cultural capitals: perceived factors associated with family eating practices among Hmong, Latino and white mothers and fathers(opens in new window)" in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.

Nutrition and Food Science student Jennifer Whitten staff members Keiko Goto, Maria Giovanni, Cindy Wolff and Stephanie Bianco published "Understanding possible roles of locally-grown ethnic produce in dietary practices and food cultures: An exploratory study(opens in new window)" in the Journal of Hunger and Environmental Nutrition.

Center for Healthy Communities (CHC) was featured on the North State Public Radio for their Farm to School programs funded in part by the California Department of Food and Agriculture(opens in new window). The featured projects are Colusa City Schools Have Kids Eating their Fruits and Veggies(opens in new window) and North Valley Food Service gets a Healthy, Tasty Start to the New Year(opens in new window) which are under the direction of Sheila McQuaid, CHC's Farm to Fork Coordinator and Stephanie Bianco, CHC's Assistant Director and Associate Professor for the Department of Nutrition and Food Science.

Members from the Center for Healthy Communities, Cindy Wolff, Stephanie Biano, Keiko Goto and Aurelia Samonte and Nutrition and Food Science student Janelle Morris, were published in the California Journal of Health Promotion for their peer-review article on "Get Cookin’: Investigating the effects of a six-week cooking intervention on cooking and dietary behaviors among low-income families (PDF)".

Nutrition and Food Science student Min Hu, faculty members Keiko Goto, Chunyan Song and Director of Center for Healthy Communities Cindy Wolff published "The impact of social and cultural factors on the consumption of western fast food among Chinese children"(opens in new window) in the Community Development Journal.

Carolynn Arpin, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, was awarded a $15,000 grant through the CSUPERB New Investigator program for her proposal titled "Generation of Dimeric GRB2 Antagonists to Treat Myeloid Leukemia."

Lisa Ott, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is published in Fuel Process Technology journal with her paper on "Waste Glycerol from Biodiesel Synthesis as a Component in Deep Eutectic Solvents."(opens in new window) Other authors include: Blake Bewley, Asem Berkaliev, Hanne Henriksen, David Ball.

Jinsong Zhang, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is lead author on a recently accepted paper "Experimental and Theoretical Investigations of the Bromination of Phenols with beta & gamma Aliphatic Substituents, including Rings," for publication in the Journal of Organic Chemistry. Among her coauthors is Randy Miller, Chair and Professor of the Department of Chemistry, and Xiao Chang, Erich Bowman, Carter Holt; Michael Lodewyk and Guangming Xia.

Perry M. Gee, faculty member from the School of Nursing, contributed to a published article on "e-Patients Perceptions of Using Personal Health Records for Self-management Support of Chronic Illness," published in Computers Informatics Nursing.

Xueli Zou, chair and professor in Physics, invited to present a talk "Using Students’ Design Tasks to Develop Scientific Abilities" at the Physics Education Research Conference 2015 at College Park, Maryland, July 29-30, 2015.
