When Jim Houpis was in high school, his biology teacher strongly influenced the path he would follow in his life and his desire to improve the environment. Over the last 35 years, he has transformed this desire into developing a scientific understanding of the impacts of pollution and climate change on plants. However, in the end, Dr. Houpis believes to achieve real change and lasting solutions we must develop mechanisms to transmit our scientific understanding to students and the public at large. The Dean's teaching and research philosophy is embodied in the following quote from Physicist Robert Oppenheimer (1954), "The specialization of science is an inevitable accompaniment of progress; yet it is full of dangers, and it is cruelly wasteful, since so much that is beautiful and enlightening is cut off from most of the world. Thus it is proper to the role of the scientist that he not merely find the truth and communicate it to his fellows, but that he teach, that he try to bring the most honest and most intelligible account of new knowledge to all who will try to learn."
